Origins,
since 2019.
Founded in a ground-floor flat in Hackney with £8,000, a borrowed cupping table, and a shortlist of forty-one farmers who had never had their work covered at length in English.
We publish a quarterly magazine about specialty coffee — the farms, the washing stations, the export benches, the roasters, the kitchens where the cup actually lands. We publish at length. We send writers to places. We pay them properly and we pay the people they interview for their time.
Our editorial position is simple: every cup of coffee is a particular place and a particular set of hands, and the work of the magazine is to treat those particulars seriously. We do not review cafes. We do not publish brewing guides. We do not run sponsored content; the print edition carries advertising only from small roasters and equipment makers we have personally vetted and, in most cases, visited.
The magazine is printed letterpress on Munken Pure 120gsm by a family press in Kent that has been in business for seventy-four years and that we will follow wherever it goes. The cover stock changes every issue. The typefaces do not.

We pay for the coffee we report on at market rates; we do not accept complimentary lots from producers, roasters, or exporters. Travel costs are borne by the magazine. Writers disclose, in print, any commercial relationships they have with the subjects of their reporting.
We fact-check every feature against the named sources, and where possible against a second independent source in the region. Corrections, when necessary, are printed in the subsequent issue in the same place and at the same length.
